Message shifters affect syncro life, but there is a lot of decent info on that page.

The presumption they are making though is that you are always able to match engine speed to driveshaft speed for the gear being engaged - this is not always possible. Heel and toe braking it is possible and when driving the car like granny, it is possible, but when you are driving the car hard to get the best acceleration, you need the syncros to slow the clutch disc during upshifts as quickly as possible - short shifters make the shifting process notchy and usually results in a mis-shift or slamming the engagement hub into the syncro and gear splines so hard that the syncro never gets the input shaft down to speed and the splines of the engagement hub and gear take a beating. Once the engagement hub spline tips are damaged and rounded, they will not engage to the syncro splines properly, which leads to damaging the spline tips on the syncro.

The wear I am speaking of that short shifters cause isn't at the friction surface of the syncro, rather, the spline tips are damaged which cause the syncro's performance to degrade.

I had a short shifter in my car for a couple of years and went through several trannies and a lot of mis-shifts at the drag strip. When I built my current Z32, I left the stock shifter in place. Its geometry allows for more leverage at the knob and this combined with the longer throw produces a much smoother shift process that prevents syncro damage.
